When I was a bairn about 62 years ago my father would take the family out for a run in the car and I remember coming down the hill from Kettlehill to the crossroads at Kettle cemetery and just about fifty yards from the junction Dad stopped the car and pointed out a red brick cross built into the wall. Now I cannot be certain but I am sure he said that the cross was to commemorate the first woman murdered in Fife or at least that area. He grew up in that area and a few months ago I travelled back to that spot to check it was still there and sure enough it is. The question is who or what does this represent or where can I get info. on it?
What I can say is the nearest murder to where the cross is, was Margaret Maxwell suffered stouthrief (Robbery with violence) in 1852 at Hilton of Forthar, the Scanlan brothers were hanged at Cupar for this crime.
